Cochrane Reviews: Music Therapy

Several music therapy researchers, led by Dr. Joke Bradt and Dr. Cherly Dileo, have been developing a series of Cochrane Reviews that focus on music therapy research. Cochrane Reviews must follow intensely rigorous scientific methods and these reviews contribute valuable credibility to the field.

This review examined music therapy with adult populations with acquired brain damage of a non-degenerative nature, and its effects on gait, upper extremity function, communication, mood and emotions, social skills, pain, behavioral outcomes, activities of daily living, and adverse events.

MUSIC THERAPY FOR END-OF-LIFE CARE

This Cochrane systematic review by Dr. Joke Bradt and Dr. Cheryl Dileo included five clinical trails with a total of 175 patients. We included randomized and quasi-randomized controlled trials that compared music therapy interventions and standard care with standard care alone or combined with other therapies in any care setting with a diagnosis of advanced life-limiting illness being treated with palliative intent and with a life expectancy of less than two
years.
